Game-Changer for Chinese Language Education in the Territory: CLTANT Hosts 3rd PD Workshop on AI in the Classroom

DARWIN, NT – 16 September 2026 – The Chinese Language Teachers Association of the Northern Territory (CLTANT) successfully held its third Professional Development workshop for 2026 on Saturday morning, 16th September, at the Confucius Institute, Orange 2, Level 4, Casuarina Campus, Charles Darwin University.
Themed "AI Tools in Chinese Teaching", the sold-out, members-only workshop brought together Chinese teachers from across the Territory for a highly practical and forward-looking three-hour intensive.

The workshop focused on two key areas: integrating Chinese cultural understanding with AI-enhanced language standards and classroom practice, and the practical application of AI for lesson planning and presentation development.
Workshop 1: From Chinese Culture to AI-Enhanced Learning — Language Standards, Learners and Classroom PracticePresented by Xin Shi
Xin brilliantly bridged the gap between deep cultural understanding and modern pedagogy, showing us how AI can help us better align with language standards while keeping the learner at the centre of everything we do.

Workshop 2: AI-Assisted Chinese Lesson Planning and Presentation DevelopmentPresented by Jin Pin
This is where the magic really happened. Jin introduced AI as our Super Teaching Assistant.

In what many attendees described as a watershed moment for local language education, participating teachers were introduced to AI as a super teaching assistant. Rather than replacing pedagogical expertise, the technology was demonstrated as a powerful tool to reclaim teacher time and elevate classroom engagement.
A central focus was AI-assisted lesson preparation. Teachers learned how strategic prompt engineering can generate fully customised, curriculum-aligned lesson plans in a matter of minutes. The workshop moved beyond theory, with attendees actively refining prompts and sharing effective strategies in real time using AI mini-programs and mainstream AI platforms.
The second major breakthrough was the shift away from static, one-way PowerPoint delivery. The workshop demonstrated a workflow where a standard teaching plan can be rapidly transformed into a highly interactive, multimedia-rich H5P webpage. This approach allows for a single-share link that works seamlessly across all devices, offering students a far more immersive and interactive learning experience than traditional slides.
During the session, teachers put these skills into practice immediately, creating their own interactive AI-powered courseware on the spot. The hands-on format ensured every participant left with tangible, classroom-ready resources.

The significance for the future of Chinese education cannot be overstated. For a discipline that demands constant differentiation across characters, tones, culture, and learner levels, AI provides critical support to reduce administrative burden and allow teachers to focus on meaningful student connection and cultural instruction. This PD has equipped Territory teachers with a practical toolkit that is both time-saving and pedagogically transformative.

The workshop was offered free of charge to all CLTANT members, including materials and refreshments.

CLTANT thanks all members who attended and contributed to the collaborative and innovative spirit of the day.
